    Description

Vintage very rare 1938 Original first edition Gene Krupa Drum Method! **LOOK**.
Here is an extremely rare original edition of Gene Krupa’s drum method. Overall great condition for its age. This is a wonderful piece of history for any vintage drum collector or Gene Krupa fan.
    The
    Gene Krupa Drum Method,
published in1938, was an important book when it comes to understanding the history of drum set playing. As Gene Krupa studied with Sanford Moeller, the
    Gene Krupa Drum Method
brought valuable insight into the "Moeller Technique".
    Unique Features
Size is typical 9”X12” The book includes 4 snare drum transcriptions by the book’s editor Rollo Laylan. They are: The Downfall of Paris, Breakfast Call,3 Camps, and Dinner Call. Plus, 10 original drum parts with recording reference numbers including Sing, Sing, Sing, Stompin’ At The Savoy, Whispering, Tiger Rag. From the recordings of Benny Goodman Quartette, Benny Goodman Trio, Gene Krupa’s Swing Band. 99 pages includes front and back cover.
    History
The first owner of this book signed his name at the top of page 1: J. Edward Doyle Dec. 25 1939. Maybe he received the book as a Christmas gift. – he would have been around 15 at the time. After further research, I found the following:
Edward "Jack" Doyle was born in Madison, Wisconsin in 1924. He entered the University of Wisconsin in 1941 but interrupted his schooling in1944 to join the U.S. Navy as a Radio Technician. He served in the Philippines where, despite his rating of radio technician, his primary duty was that of drummer with a Navy band specializing in the popular "big band" sound of the 1940s.
    Condition
Front and back cover are both intact. Transparent tape was put on the spline at some time and wraps onto the front page about 3/16 of an inch. The only tape left behind is the 3/16 strip on the front page. The spline is holding up nicely, but the ¼ inch paper strip that would match the cover that covers the spline is worn away. There is spot on the front cover where the image has been scraped off roughly 2”X1/4”. This scrap is only through the color image and not all the way through the paper. Some wear on the front cover corners but still I would say overall good condition.
No vintage drum collection is complete without landmark memorabilia and related vintage print material. This book is listed numerous times in the 1941 Slingerland Drums and Accessories Catalog (available at my other auction) and will be a cornerstone in any Gene Krupa collection.
